Our Summer in Tehran
An intimate and nuanced portrait of the Iranian people
In her Oscar™-nominated documentary Promises, filmmaker Justine Shapiro took us into the lives of Palestinian and Israeli children in and around Jerusalem. Justine’s new film, Our Summer in Tehran, transports us into the seldom seen realm of middle class family life in Iran.
Justine, a Jewish American mom, and her six year-old son meet 3 Iranian families: a religious family with ties to the government; a modern, secular family; and a single mom who is an actress. Relationships grow deeper and more trusting, when suddenly, Justine and Mateo are given 48 hours to leave Iran.
The connection between individuals is at the mercy of governments. Our Summer in Tehran transcends overt politics in favor of subtle, human, and often humorous moments. Part poetry, part family drama, Our Summer in Tehran invites us into the Iranian family home where we discover the extraordinary in the ordinary—where humor, affection, and humanity prevail.
