Cracked Up
The Darrell Hammond Story
This story is a hero’s journey. In Cracked Up: The Darrell Hammond Story we witness the impact that childhood trauma can have over a lifetime through the incredible story of award-winning actor, comedian, Saturday Night Live star and master impressionist, Darrell Hammond. Darrell is famous for his impressions of Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and Sean Connery, but few know his true story and the suffering he endured. Darrell performed brilliantly on live TV, all the while hiding his struggles with addiction, depression and cutting himself.
Darrell started experiencing debilitating flashbacks at the age of 19. He reached for a knife to cut himself and discovered this would temporarily stop the flashback. This was the first cut of many over decades which he bravely displays on camera. Misdiagnosed with mental illnesses Darrell was put on a long list of medications for over 40 years. After an attempted suicide, Darrell was finally brought to the doctor who would save his life with the proper diagnosis. He told Darrell, “you are the way you are because of something that happened to you” and learns that the effects of childhood trauma is not a mental illness but rather a mental injury that he can overcome.
Courageously transparent, compelling and inspirational, Darrell dramatically takes us through his experiences and all he has learned about being a trauma survivor with wisdom, humor and heart.
